1950s charm and warmth
There was virtually no surface we left untouched in this four bedroom two and a half bath home renovation.
Crystal doorknobs throughout
So welcoming!
BEFORE
Generous size living room with built-in bookcases waiting to be loved.
AFTER
Warm neutral color palette, refinished hardwood floors, new lighting, hand-knotted rugs, window treatments, art, furniture and accessories as seen from the entrance foyer.
Precious pendant for the small foyer
Our client loves birds, horses and music. We took these elements and made this home her own.
Living Room
Bespoke loveseat nestles between the windows. The back of the bookcases are painted a deep shade to accent the books and accessories displayed on the shelves.
Decorative tray
This practical yet beautiful accessory enhances the cocktail table.
At Christmas
Beautiful hand-knotted rug provides the warm color palette for the entire first floor.

Dressed for the holidays
To follow: a holiday party with good friends made special by the sounds of the piano well-played and renditions of favorite Christmas carols well-sung!
Detail of the tree
We loved bringing the colors of the decor onto the tree. Featuring bird and music ornaments, of course, along with these vintage-style Santas.

The grand piano anchors the room
Warm and welcoming.
Botanically-correct faux florals
We are enormously picky about materials when it comes to floral accents.
Magnolia garland at the holidays
Again the feeling and colors of the everyday decor infuse this custom assembled mantle treatment. Above the client's collection of Sid Dickens Memory Blocks provides three dimensional interest and a personal art expression.
Christmas in the new dining room
A saddle image continues the equestrian theme. Oversized custom magnolia wreath and table centerpiece again coordinate with the warm
tones of the overall color scheme. The table, a thrift shop find we refinished, is surrounded by two complementary styles of custom dining chairs.

Dining room
Springtime table arrangement replaces the holiday version. The fox seems to approve. The ice bucket with leather tack-like trim repeats the equestrian theme.
Dining Room
This view features the coordinating sideboard and china cabinet. The distressed golden-toned paint finish of the sideboard is repeated on the back wall of the china cabinet. The wood finish is repeated as well.
BEFORE
Kitchen in dire need of a makeover!
Family room into kitchen
This perfectly adequate space is made to feel cramped and completely cut off from the kitchen by the unnecessary peninsula - n.b. there is a small island just beyond duplicating function. This is about to change...
AFTER
So much better!
Kitchen AFTER
We did not replace the cabinetry, but instead painted it and replaced the hardware, appliances, plumbing, lighting, counters and added a natural stone backsplash to the perimeter.
Dramatic lighting
These pendants came in two sizes. We used the smaller size here and the larger one over the kitchen table. In addition we added recessed lighting and dimmable LEDs under cabinet lighting so that all work spaces are well lit.
Kitchen AFTER
Lovely tile feature graces the backsplash above the cooktop. This facelift was extensive and highly successful in improving both function and appearance.
Before
This kitchen window was used for growing plants and visually expanded the kitchen. It gave us an idea...
Small addition
We took the existing roof overhang and added a foundation, walls and new windows below.
AFTER
Meant to be.
Eating nook
Now complete with a window seat created by installing custom cabinets featuring soft-close drawer storage. An upholstered cushion provides a comfortable seat for eating or curling up with a good book.
Window seat in context
Eat-in kitchen and cooking area are complete.
From the window seat
Shallow high cabinets with a pantry closet to the right. Beyond is the family room.
Family room doubles as guest room
This Vanguard sofa converts to a queen size bed made unbelievably comfortable by the AirDream Ultra mattress we selected.
Recliner in disguise
Cozy chair for reading and watching TV. Client's art acquisition from a trip to New Orleans featured above is custom matted and framed.
Unobstructed view to kitchen
Great gathering space.
Family room
Custom floating cabinet beneath the TV and SONOS sound bar holds all necessary components.
The details
Accessories and vibrant fabric covered ottoman continue the warm palette and introduce blue to the mix.
BEFORE
The laundry area is completely dysfunctional with the washer and dryer blocking the closure of bi-fold doors and making entry from outdoors pinched. Solution: move laundry to the mud room and turn this closet into an enormous pantry.
New laundry
Since the mud room had been outside the building envelope, we needed to insulate the walls and ceiling, heat the floor and add a hydronic baseboard unit. Plumbing was rerouted, sink cabinet while new custom wall cabinets add attractive and generous storage space.
New door to kitchen
Replacing the original solid wood door with this 15-light French door made all the difference. The mud room/laundry room becomes more welcoming and feels connected to the kitchen beyond.
Folding area
More new cabinets and granite counter create additional space to fold clothes and sort mail.
Mudroom function
This is the entrance everyone uses. Door to the driveway is to the left, to the right is the door to the attached garage.
Additional storage
Gloves and scarves galore as well as leashes and doggie paraphernalia find homes in these attractive baskets.
Front entry stairwell BEFORE
We think this configuration was a 1950s one-of-a-kind... The rail was too low and the spaces between the balusters too wide - dangerous for little ones and definitely not to code. Plus first impression upon entry through the front door was not the desired "wow"...
During
We eliminated the paneled wall and reframed it to open the space down to the level of the stairs. New newel posts and rail in mahogany with a pleasing pattern of iron balusters are beginning the transformation of the foyer.
Stairs refinished
We refinished the treads and painted the risers the darker color which was repeated throughout the first floor.
At the holidays
Whimsical garland is lit with white string lights. The new rail is stained and finished to let the wood grain sing.
Race you!
Horses chase each other up the stairs to bed.
BEFORE from above
Same unsafe configuration as the original stair rail.
AFTER
Oh so much better!

Hallway from master
These framed vintage Vogue magazine covers reflect the high style of the homeowner and are a perfect theme for this narrow space.
Hall bath.
New paint color, sconces and mirror for this guest bath.
Vanity and shade
New vanity with granite top and woven natural Roman shade complete the update. We retained the vintage 1950s tile which was professionally cleaned and regrouted.
Impressive equine
Now we know why all those horses were racing up the stairs!
Guest bedroom
This bedroom features the homeowner's childhood French Provincial furniture. Our talented decorative painter took the yellowed original white finish to a new level in the color palette of our choosing.
Bedding
The furniture dictates a French theme. This bedding by designer Dan Foley is a perfect complement.
Details
The window treatments repeat the fabrics of the bedding. The circa 1960s furniture is transformed with chalk paint and our very talented painter. The detail is beautiful!
Jewelry on the ceiling
This gild and crystal flush mount fixture cast a magical pattern on the walls when lit enhancing the French vibe.
Crystal magician
The beautiful pattern on the walls is a result of light shining through the crystals on the ceiling mounted fixture.
Second guest bedroom
The existing furniture is Arts and Crafts in style and inspired the design of this room.
Lighting star
Literally! We thought this flush mount perfectly complemented the style we were going for.
Custom bedding
Another perfect complement.
Home office - the fourth bedroom
The homeowner is able to work from home quite often. Her wish? Give me an office I look forward to going working in. Challenge accepted! Beautiful hand-knotted rug, custom desk armoire, reimagined thrift shop chair and- her special request - an upholstered chaise to read and relax on.
Office armoire open
Brilliant design with table that opens when needed and tucks away completely when it's time to call it quits. We added LED lighting to the interior.
The sun always shines in this office
Completes this happiest place to work.
Accessories
The teal elephant lamp ties to the color of the desk chair and adds a bit of whimsy. The "botanically-correct" hydrangeas are placed on a bookcase - another piece transformed through chalk paint our client already owned.
Outdoor oasis
Hillside waterfall and koi pond make this backyard a private and soothing sanctuary. American-made cast aluminum furniture is deep-seated, made oh so comfortable by the plump, weather-proof Sunbrella covered cushions.
Our work here is done.
Entire house beautifully transformed, both inside and out, successfully reflecting the style and warmth of our client. What a pleasure it was!
